CONE PENETRATION TESTING
Cone Penetration Testing (CPT)
During a CPT, an electrical cone on the end of a series of rods is pushed into the
ground at a constant rate of 2cm/s. Continuous measurements are made of resistance
to penetration of the cone and the frictional resistance, or adhesion, on a surface
sleeve set immediately behind the cone end assembly.
Advantages of the CPT:
* It provides a continuous record of ground conditions.
* It avoids the disturbance of the ground associated with boring and sampling.
* It is significantly cheaper and faster.
